COMMUNITY GROUPS
ASC has provided services to PWAs since 1989
by Melanie Richards
The AIDS Service Connection (ASC) of Columbus is a hands-on service group dedicated to empowering people living with HIV/ AIDS and their loved ones. Since its inception in 1989, ASC has experienced steady growth in the variety of services it offers, the number of volunteers providing direct services and the number of individuals and families receiving assistance.
For the past six years ASC's purpose has remained simple and firm: to enable people with
plies, which are free to our clients. There are washers, dryers, and laundry detergent at the Third Avenue Community Church, 1066 N. High St., for our clients' use.
ASC also offers several support groups.
The morning PWA Support Group is hosted by ASC every Monday from 10:30 am to noon at ASC's High Street location. The Parents Support Group is held on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 12:30 to 2:00 pm at St. John's Episcopal Church in Worthington. In addition a Grief Support Group is being held during the summer on the first Thursday of every month from 7:00 to 8:30 pm at Kobacker House.
ASC
HIV/AIDS to maintain control and dignity in their lives. ASC is the only AIDS service organization in Columbus with two permanent locations for access to services. People interested in offering their time, resources or financial support, or those in need of assistance are invited to contact ASC at 614221-7979 or 614-291-2300.
For those of you who are not familiar with ASC, we thought this column would be the perfect opportunity to acquaint people with the services offered and keep the community aware of upcoming events sponsored by ASC.
At the AIDS Service Connection we do one thing: provide direct services. This includes assisting our clients with housing, laundry, housekeeping, transportation, case work/advocacy, and outreach to the African American community. We also keep a stockpile of toiletries and various cleaning sup-
We also sponsor "On-The-Go" activities every month for our clients. In the past few months these activities have included trips to CAPA Summer Movie Series and the Columbus Gay Men's Chorus concert. These events are free of charge to our clients. In August, "On-The-Go" will attend the Ohio State Fair.
Please feel free to join us for our monthly community dinner on the fourth Saturday of every month at 7:00 pm at the North Broadway Methodist Church. This month's dinner is August 26. See you there!
